Every question is written from the 2026 California Notary Public Handbook. Every fee is checked against the California Secretary of State (SOS), with the date shown. We are not the Secretary of State.

The part the mill sites bury under ads

Most "become a notary" sites are selling you a course and rushing you past the real math. Here is the honest version before you spend a dollar.

$20 + $40 State application fee plus the exam fee Both set by the Secretary of State. The bond, course, and supplies are separate and market-priced.
Weeks, not days Live Scan alone can take about four weeks Exam results come back in 15 to 20 business days. Plan for the wait, not the ad that promises "notary in a day."
Maybe Whether loan signing is worth it The loan-signing-agent (LSA) market is saturated and fees have compressed. We give you the estimator, not a promise.

Is the California notary exam hard?

It is passable but not a rubber stamp. The exam is closed-book and covers the whole 2026 handbook, so the people who fail are the ones who skimmed. Study the notarial acts, identification rules, and journal duties and most first-timers pass.

How much does a commission really cost?

The state charges a $20 application fee and a $40 exam fee. Then the required 6-hour course, the $15,000 bond premium, Live Scan, and a seal and journal are market-priced on top, so most new notaries spend a few hundred dollars all in.

How long does it take to become a notary?

Budget several weeks, not a weekend. After the 6-hour course and exam, results take 15 to 20 business days and the Live Scan background check can take about four weeks. You then file your oath and bond within 30 days.
